Bedfordshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy

The Environment Act was passed in November 2021, and included a duty for Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) to be produced across the whole of the country. Local Nature Recovery Strategies are a new system of spatial strategies for protecting and improving the environment, including nature recovery – underpinning the delivery of the ‘Nature Recovery Network’.

Each strategy will, for the area it covers:

  • Agree priorities for nature recovery
  • Map the most valuable existing areas for nature
  • Map proposals for creating or improving nature and wider environmental benefits

The preferred geography for an LNRS is at a county scale, and the Bedfordshire LNP is working closely with our three local unitary authorities, Bedford Borough Council, Central Bedfordshire Council (the proposed ‘Responsible Authority’ for the LNRS) and Luton Borough Council to prepare for the production of the LNRS by reviewing and collating existing data, identifying key stakeholders and groupings and raising awareness of the process.
